Most yoga mats are made with petroleum based plastics and travel thousands of kilometers before reaching your studio, but there is another way to do things
Every year, millions of yoga mats are manufactured using petroleum derived materials such as PVC, TPE or EVA, which release toxins and microplastics. Most of them are produced in Asia and travel thousands of kilometers before arriving in Europe. At oléyoga we choose to do things differently.
Local production powered by renewable energy
We produce our mats locally to eliminate transcontinental transport, reduce the carbon footprint and guarantee fair working conditions. Since 2022, the production plant has been equipped with photovoltaic solar panels that generate about 10 percent of the electricity needed for manufacturing. In addition, around 37 percent of all energy consumed comes from certified renewable sources. This combination allows us to move towards a cleaner and more transparent energy model while gradually reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Eco friendly materials and adhesive free manufacturing
The surface of our mats is made from high density natural rubber that provides a secure grip even during more intense practices. The core is made with recycled rubber to ensure a responsible use of raw materials. We apply a thin intermediate layer of organic cotton to preserve the structure of the mat without using glues or chemical adhesives.
During manufacturing, we fuse the rubber layers by applying heat instead of synthetic binders to avoid chemical compounds. Our mats are also reversible so you can use both sides and extend their lifespan, reducing the need to buy a new one.
Responsible water use
Water is an essential resource. This is why we incorporate our own purification systems in the production process, allowing us to treat nearly 80 percent of the water used. About 30 percent of this treated water is reused in the mat manufacturing process, reducing both the consumption of new water and the environmental impact.
Circular economy and waste reduction
Waste management is another key pillar to reduce environmental impact. The core of our mats includes recycled rubber and we are working on a program to collect mats at the end of their life cycle and reintegrate their materials into new production batches. Our circular vision also applies to packaging. Both the wrapping and the boxes are made with recycled kraft paper, avoiding single use plastics.
Designed for greater durability
Extending the lifespan of each yoga mat is essential to reduce its environmental footprint. This is why we conduct compression, absorption and abrasion tests in the laboratory to ensure resistance and durability over time. The closed cell natural rubber surface prevents moisture and bacteria from entering, facilitates cleaning and helps keep the mat in good condition for years.
A yoga mat that makes an impact
We know that yoga is based on coherence between body, mind and environment. At oléyoga we do not just design mats, we design responsible production processes. We plant one tree for every mat sold, we use renewable energy, we promote recycling and we make responsible use of raw materials. Practicing yoga is not only a matter of posture or breathing, it is also a matter of coherence with the world we inhabit.
