Around 36 million yoga mats are sold worldwide every year and roughly 70 % of them are plastic. Most are made in Asia and shipped to Europe, almost none can be recycled, and the material that dominates the category fragments for centuries rather than decomposing. This is what the yoga industry actually produces, from raw material to landfill.

What the numbers look like
Yoga has grown fast and mats have grown with it. The scale is easy to miss because a mat is bought once every few years and thought about almost never:
- Around 36 million mats sold a year, worldwide.
- About 70 % contain plastic: PVC, TPE or EVA, all petroleum derivatives.
- More than 80 % of the mats sold in Europe are manufactured in Asia, which means a heavy, bulky object crossing most of the planet before it reaches a mat bag.
“It is a paradox. We practise yoga to connect, on a product that is disconnected from the planet”, says David Almazán, founder of oléyoga. “The industry needs to look beyond cost optimisation and start acting with coherence.”
Why PVC is the problem and not just the cheapest option
PVC is rigid on its own, so it needs plasticisers to become the flexible sheet you roll out. Those additives are what make it usable and what make it almost impossible to recycle: the mix of compounds and contaminants prevents a homogeneous recycled material, very few facilities can process it, and the treatment itself can release toxic gases.
A PVC mat does not decompose so much as fragment, over a period measured in centuries, releasing what was added to it along the way. Heat, sweat and friction accelerate that surface breakdown during the years you are practising on it.
TPE is marketed as the responsible alternative and it is a genuine improvement on one axis, since it contains no phthalates. It is still a petroleum thermoplastic whose properties depend entirely on each manufacturer's blend (Thermoplastic Elastomers, InTech), and it is not biodegradable whatever the product page says.
The freight nobody counts
A mat weighs between one and three kilos and rolls into a bulky cylinder. That is the worst possible combination for shipping, and it is the largest variable in a mat's footprint that a brand actually controls.
The conversation stops at the material because the material is the easy part to talk about. A mat can be made of the most renewable substance available and still travel from China, Taiwan or India by container ship and then by road before reaching a European studio.
“We want people to buy less, but with higher quality and greater traceability”, says Almazán. “Choosing mats made locally with natural materials and fair processes does not only reduce environmental impact, it also supports the people behind the product.”
What happens at the end
Almost nothing good. A worn out mat is large, dirty and often two materials bonded together, which puts it outside every kerbside recycling stream in Europe. Almost no brand runs a take back scheme, ours included.

So most mats end up incinerated or in landfill, where the plastic ones fragment into particles that reach soil and water. The often quoted projection that there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050 comes from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy report rather than from the United Nations, which is worth getting right given how often it is repeated second hand.
The part that touches you, not just the planet
You spend several hours a week in direct skin contact with whatever your mat is made of. As synthetic mats age, friction, sweat and heat degrade the surface and release microparticles exactly where your hands and feet are.
“We often choose our mats for their colour, price or grip, but few people ask what they are made of and how those materials behave against the body when you practise”, says Christine Xu, co-founder of oléyoga.
This is the argument that tends to move people more than the landfill one, and it is the same material question seen from closer up.
What the alternatives actually offer
Natural rubber, cork, jute and hemp are renewable and degrade in years rather than centuries. None of them is innocent:
- Rubber is a plantation crop, and plantations replace something. Land use change in the tropics is well documented (Nature Communications, 2014).
- Cork and jute cannot make a mat on their own. They need a flexible base, and that base is often PVC, EVA or TPE. The surface looks natural and the mat is not.
- Nothing here is compostable at home. Vulcanised rubber degrades over years, in conditions a garden does not provide.
What actually reduces the impact
- Keep the mat you have. No material choice beats not replacing a working mat, which makes durability an environmental argument before a commercial one.
- Ask what it is made of, and read “eco” as the unregulated word it is.
- Ask where it was made, because the container is a large part of the answer.
- Ask what happens at the end. Almost nobody publishes an answer, and that silence is information.
The short version
Thirty-six million mats a year, seven in ten of them plastic, most crossing the planet to get to you, and almost none recyclable at the end. The material matters, the freight matters as much, and the mat with the lowest impact is the one you already own.
