A small, warm, deeply Nordic festival that raises money for children's charities and spreads across a civic centre and the city's studios. Everything happens indoors, on wooden and vinyl studio floors, in the middle of the Norwegian winter.

The largest yoga event in Scandinavia, at the turn of January into February, with international teachers and a schedule dense enough to fill three days. It happens in hotel conference rooms, which means carpet: a surface where light mats creep forward through a standing sequence.
A note on the German winter fair
For years January belonged to the YogaWorld fair in Munich. Its organiser currently announces only the Stuttgart edition in April, so we have taken Munich out of the calendar rather than send you to a fair that may not happen. If it returns, it comes back here.

The biggest yoga and wellbeing event in the Nordics, and the reason February is not empty: a converted cable factory turned into twelve studios, over a hundred exhibitors and more than a hundred and thirty classes, talks and workshops across a weekend that spills into the first days of March. Industrial concrete and studio floors throughout, in the coldest, darkest stretch of the Finnish year.
What to do with a quiet month
If nothing near you is on, February is when studios run their teacher trainings and when a mat that has survived a year of practice shows its wear. It is a good moment to check yours: yoga mat care covers cleaning and storage, and the honest signals that one is finished.

An 800-year-old four-sided farmhouse standing alone among the hills, meadows and forests of Upper Austria, running a spring edition in March and an autumn one in November. Sixty-odd workshops over three days, plenty of them outdoors: wooden platforms and meadow grass, with a bathing pond and a chakra path between sessions.
The quietest month in Europe, almost
Beyond the Austrian farmhouse above, March is the emptiest month on this calendar, and we would rather say so than pad the list with events that fold after two editions. The winter fairs are over, the outdoor season starts in May, and the calendar takes a breath.

Mountain light, mountain cold at dawn, and a surface that alternates between lodge floors and open ground.

Half a century of 3HO Kundalini camp in a forest beside a lake, and the annual pilgrimage for that community across Europe, Spain included. Dawn sadhana happens outdoors before sunrise and the rest under vast tents on woodland ground: damp grass, pine needles, roots.

The oldest thing on this calendar and the least like a festival: a week in an Alpine village where the European Union of Yoga has gathered teachers and schools for around half a century. It is a congress, with lectures and shared meals alongside practice, and it is the closest Europe has to its own history of yoga in one room. Village halls and mountain ground at 1,670 m.

The Iberian calendar closes in Lisbon with an indoor congress format, teachers from Portugal and abroad, and a city that is mild enough in December to make the trip pleasant.
Which mat should you take? Ask what the floor is
Read the calendar back and a pattern appears: yoga festivals happen on grass, on fair-pavilion concrete, on hotel carpet, on sand, on monastery stone and on theatre boards. Almost never on the warm, clean studio floor your mat knows from home. And at nearly every one of them, you bring your own.
Each of those floors asks something different. Morning grass adds dew, and damp is exactly where smooth mats stop gripping. Do I need to bring my own mat to a yoga festival?
At nearly every festival in this calendar, yes. Large events provide the space and the teachers, not the mats, and the few that rent them will not tell you what those mats have absorbed. Bring yours.
When is yoga festival season in Europe?
Twice a year. Outdoors from May to August: parks, meadows, dunes and camps. Indoors from October to April: the urban festivals, the fairs of Stuttgart, London and Milan, and the Scandinavian hotel editions. March is the genuinely quiet month. September looks empty from Spain but is not: the Alps and Italy carry it.
What surface will I practise on at a festival?
Grass and bare ground outdoors; concrete, carpet and boards indoors. Almost never a studio floor. If your mat depends on a perfect surface to grip, a festival is where you will find out.
