Six things decide whether a mat suits you: material, thickness, density, texture, size and weight. Most buying guides cover the first two and skip the one that predicts the most, which is density. This is what each of them actually changes in practice, including where our own mat is the wrong answer.

Thickness is the number on the packaging. Density is the number that decides how the mat behaves.

Material

The single biggest variable, and it decides grip, weight and what happens to the mat afterwards.

Most mats are PVC or TPE, both petroleum products. Natural rubber and cork are the renewable alternatives, and they behave differently from each other: rubber holds grip furthest into the wet range, cork grips better the damper it gets and then saturates.

One correction worth carrying into a shop: TPE is not biodegradable, whatever the label says. It is a synthetic copolymer. Recyclable where facilities exist, which is a real improvement on PVC and is not the same claim. We put all seven materials side by side in our comparison of yoga mat materials.

Thickness

Mats run from 1.5 mm travel mats to 6 mm studio mats, and the trade is the same at every point on that range: comfort up, stability down.

  • 1.5 to 2 mm. Travel. Thin enough to fold into a bag and uncomfortable on knees on a hard floor.
  • 4 to 5 mm. Where most serious mats sit, because it is the band where cushioning and stability are both acceptable.
  • 6 mm and up. Comfortable to kneel on, and standing poses lose definition as the foot sinks.

The instinct to buy thicker usually comes from knee discomfort in kneeling poses. A folded blanket solves that where it exists and costs nothing, whereas thickness applies everywhere including where you did not want it.

Density, which is the one people miss

Two mats can be 4 mm and behave nothing alike. Thickness is how far a mat can compress. Density is whether it stops. A soft mat keeps giving under sustained load until you are effectively on the floor; a dense one reaches a depth and holds it.

The best available proxy is weight per millimetre, and almost nobody publishes it. As a rough guide at 4 mm, a mat around 1.2 kg is light and soft, and one around 1.8 kg is dense. Density is also what holds a mat to a hard floor, which is a separate problem from grip and gets confused with it constantly.

Texture and grip

Grip is not one property, and “non-slip yoga mat” means nothing until you say wet or dry. A mat can hold dry hands perfectly and lose them the moment you sweat, and those are different questions with different answers.

Friction between skin and a surface changes with moisture and not in a straight line: a little damp can increase it, a continuous film separates the surfaces and collapses it (a review of skin tribology).

Which means the honest question for a hot practice is the opposite of what it is usually said to be. A heated class demands more from a surface, not less, and a smooth mat is the worst thing you can take into one. Cork or an open cell surface handles that practice; a towel handles it on any mat.

Size

Consider your height and your floor. A 185 cm mat suits practitioners up to around two metres, and extra width helps if you have a broad frame or practise dynamically.

The part worth checking before you buy is where the mat is going to live. A longer mat that does not fit your room is a mat you stop unrolling.

Weight, and the trade nobody states

This is where the guides go quiet, because the answer is inconvenient: the mats that grip best are the heaviest, and for the same reason. Density holds a mat to the floor and keeps the surface from deforming under your hand.

So a light mat that stays put on a smooth hard floor does not really exist. If you commute daily with your mat on your back, that is a genuine reason to accept less grip, and anyone telling you that you can have both is selling.

Where our mat is the wrong answer

The Eco Daily is 4 mm of 100 % natural rubber, 185 × 65 cm, reversible, 1.8 kg, made in Europe. That is light for a natural rubber mat and heavy next to any plastic one, which is exactly the trade described above.

It is the wrong mat for you if:

  • You need a travel mat, or the honest middle path: a natural rubber yoga mat for travel. At 1.8 kg it is not one, and we do not sell it as one.
  • Your main practice is hot. The closed cell surface keeps sweat on top. Cork is the better answer.
  • You have a diagnosed latex allergy. Natural rubber contains latex, and that is a question for your allergist.
  • You want maximum cushioning. 4 mm is dense rather than soft, and for restorative floor work a blanket beats any mat.

A shortlist for the shop

  1. What is it made of, and read “eco” as the unregulated word it is.
  2. What does it weigh, and at what thickness. The two numbers together tell you more than either alone.
  3. Press it with a thumb. If your thumb reaches the floor, so will your knee.
  4. Ask about grip when wet, not grip. Nobody in this category publishes a measurement, ourselves included, so treat every answer as an argument.
  5. Ask what happens at the end. Almost no brand publishes one, and the silence is information.

The short version

Material decides grip and end of life, thickness trades comfort against stability, and density decides how the mat actually behaves. The best mat is the one you keep for years, which makes durability an environmental argument as much as a commercial one.
